A British Airways flight crew member and passenger burst into tears when they heard the Queen had died.
Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully at Balmoral at around 6.30pm on Thursday.
While the news spread across the country and the globe, one flight from New York to Heathrow was completely oblivious to what had happened.
The plane was set to land in London just an hour after the announcement was made by Buckingham Palace.
The pilot wanted his passengers to know what had happened and decided to tell them before landing.
In footage taken by US passenger Michael Capiraso, 60, the pilot can be heard saying: ‘Elizabeth, the Queen, passed away earlier today with the family by her side, we have little more information than that at the moment.
‘But I thought I should at least tell you that before you arrive at the terminal as I know many will be very, very sad about this.
‘It will give you some time to reflect, as I say we have 40 minutes to landing. We’ll all be thinking about her family at this time.’
A flight attendant and a passenger standing next to each other could be seen crying while they listened to the news.
One of the women held her hands up to her face in shock while the other used a tissue to wipe her tears away.
Michael told MailOnline how he and his family were on the BA Flight 178 to take his daughter to the University of Edinburgh.
