Meghan Markle’s relationship with Kate, Duchess of Cambridge was plagued with rumours of rivalry from the moment the former Suits actress became a member of the Royal Family. However, a new book seeks to set the record straight. Unofficial biography Finding Freedom by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand charts Meghan and Harry’s step down as senior royals and the events which led up to it.

The book, which is being serialised in the Times and Sunday Times, has been written with “the participation of those closest to the couple”.

And it seems the book contains some rather explosive claims about the reported royal rift between the Cambridges and the Sussexes.

According to the authors, Meghan and Kate “were not at war with each other” but the Duchesses “just didn’t know each other that well.”

They claim the distance between Meghan and Kate led to “awkward moments” including one involving a shopping trip.

When Meghan was still just Harry’s girlfriend she is said to have crossed paths with Kate at Kensington Palace and, following a chat, the pair established they were both about to go shopping on the same street.

However, rather than invite Meghan to join her, Kate is said to have gone off in her own Range Rover.

Relaying the cringe-worthy anecdote Mr Scobie and Ms Durand write: “There were awkward moments, such as the day the women happened to cross paths at Kensington Palace (in early 2017, when Harry and Meghan were still only dating), and although both were heading out to go shopping — in the same street — Kate went in her own Range Rover.”

The book states Meghan was “disappointed” Kate “didn’t reach out to her” when she became Harry’s girlfriend and give her a hand in adjusting to life in the Royal Family.

But the authors add that Kate felt “they didn’t have much in common.”

Mr Scobie and Ms Durand write: “At the outset of her romance with Harry, Meghan had fully expected Kate to reach out and give her the lie of the land on everything an outsider to the Firm needed to know.

“But that was not how things turned out.

“Meghan was disappointed that she and Kate hadn’t bonded over the position they shared, but she wasn’t losing sleep over it.”

They added: “According to a source, Kate felt they didn’t have much in common ‘other than the fact that they lived at Kensington Palace’.”

While Kate and Meghan may have appeared frosty with one another at times, Finding Freedom puts this down to the fact they “just didn’t know each other that well.”

The book claims that when Meghan and Harry tied the knot in 2018, she and Kate had only met a handful of times.

The authors write: “Although some aides claimed at the time that they ‘talked and texted regularly’, by the time of Harry and Meghan’s wedding the sisters-in-law had spent only a handful of occasions together.”

Finding Freedom also touches upon an infamous fallout Kate and Meghan were reported to have had at a bridesmaid’s dress fitting ahead of Meghan’s wedding.

Kate’s daughter Princess Charlotte was among Meghan’s bridesmaids and ahead of the wedding it was reported Kate had been reduced to tears due to Meghan’s “strict demands.”

According to Mr Scobie and Ms Durand while the fitting was “stressful” there were “no tears.”

They write: “A source, who was at the mid-May wedding fitting and has never discussed before what really happened, said stories about tears have been ‘puzzling’ to those who were present.

“‘Some of the children weren’t co-operating, and there was a lot going on.

“Everyone tried to help where they could, but it’s never easy with kids at fittings.

“There were no tears from anyone. And in the end, the fitting was fine.

“Kate and Meghan were both a little stressed but professionals in the room, and there were other people there.”
