Army on standby after red alert issued over 100mph Storm Eunice winds
Boris Johnson has said the army is on standby to deal with the fallout of Storm Eunice, which is expected to sweep the UK tomorrow morning.
The Prime Minister said troops were at the ready after a rare red weather warning was issued by the Met Office.
Forecasters have warned of 100mph winds which could tear power lines down and send debris flying through the air, putting people’s lives in danger.
The Government have held an emergency Cobra meeting to discuss the storm, which could also bring flooding to the south coast and the west of England.
People are being urged to reschedule travel plans and stay inside if they can, while a number of schools are also expected to close for the day.
Fears were strong enough for Gloucestershire’s Local Resilience Forum to declare a major incident due to the ‘danger to life’ Storm Eunice poses.
During a visit to RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire, the PM said: ‘So for those who have already been affected by Storm Dudley, we are offering all the support that we can.
‘My sympathies to those who are still without power – we are working with the power companies, the local authorities to get their juice restored as fast as possible. But of course, the army is on standby.’
