Rory Stewart was forced to make an embarrassing confession about his campaign video filmed on Tuesday in Kew Gardens. While speaking, Mr Stewart appears to be holding up his phone with his arm extended, but the camera stays remarkably still. One sharp Twitter user pointed out: “@RoryStewartUK are you pretending to hold your phone?“ Mr Stewart simply posted in response: “Yes.”

In the footage, the International Development Secretary said: “I’m in the slightly absurd setting of Kew Gardens.

“I’m here partly because were doing some very interesting work with cocoa farms.

“But it’s all actually an amazing reminder for me, after the conversations yesterday in Borough Market ad Barking, just what amazing things we have in this country and how much we can be if we come together.

“And actually the things we have in common, the environment, climate, our love of our countryside, our love of our landscape.

“And many of the things that make me proud not just to be a Conservative, but proud to be British.”

Theresa May attended yesterday her last EU summit as a British Prime Minister.

In her first public appearance since her emotional resignations speech, she blamed the Conservative Party’s humiliating results in Europe on failing to deliver Brexit.

And she urged her successor to do their utmost to leave the bloc with a Brexit deal.

She said: “While I’ve been prime minister, I’ve been to something like 15 meetings or more and, in every one of those, I’ve been working hard to negotiate the best possible deal for the UK in leaving the European Union and it’s a matter of great regret to me that I haven’t been able to deliver Brexit.

“But of course that matter is for my successor and they will have to find a way of addressing the very strongly held views on both sides of this issue. To do that and to get a majority in parliament, as I said on Friday, I think will require compromise.

“I’ve always taken a view that the best option for the UK is to leave the European Union with a deal. I’m not going to comment on the views of individual candidates.

“There will be a process of selecting my successor as leader of the Conservative party but I continue to have the view that it’s best for the UK to leave with a deal.”
