Archie christening: The reason why Serena Williams won’t be at baby Archie’s christening
Tennis star Serena William’s is just one of Meghan Markle’s celebrity pals. The Queen of The Court was considered a likely pick to be Archie’s Harrison’s godmother but she won’t be able to attend tomorrow’s christening for this reason.
Archie Harrison will be christened at an exclusive Windsor Castle ceremony tomorrow with no more than 25 guests.
The Duchess of Sussex’s long-term pal Serena Williams was expected to be among them, but work commitments mean she probably won’t make it.
Williams, 37, is currently in the UK taking part in the Wimbledon tennis tournament.
The American was meant to play mixed doubles alongside British star Andy Murray today but the match was postponed until tomorrow.
Serena is already scheduled to play a singles match against Julia Goerges on Court 1 on Saturday, but will now likely have to play two matches.
Wimbledon officials promptly decided to postpone Murray and Williams’ doubles match for the night on Friday after Cori Gauff’s clash with Polona Hercog ran on.
Meghan took a rare break from caring for little Archie to cheer on Serena at Wimbledon yesterday.
Asked whether she would be attending Archie’s royal celebration, Serena, said: “No, I’m working on Saturday…so, she understands work.”
The tennis champion also touched on her reaction to Meghan’s surprise appearance at Wimbledon.
She said: “Yes I knew she was there and it’s always exciting when she comes out to watch and support the tennis so I was happy.”
Mum-of-one Serena also said she hoped her daughter Olympia would be like a “big sister” to little Archie.
Quizzed if she planned to teach Archie tennis, Serena joked: “I don’t know, I’m actually working on Olympia’s game so maybe she can give tips to him.”
Archie’s christening will be an exclusive event away from the public gaze.
The ceremony will be held in the inner sanctum of Windsor Castle and while there is much speculation as to who the godparents will be, their identities will be kept secret.
A Buckingham Palace statement about the christening said: “Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor will be christened in a small private ceremony by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the Private Chapel at Windsor Castle on Saturday 6th July.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex look forward to sharing some images taken on the day by photographer Chris Allerton.
“The godparents, keeping with their wishes, will remain private.”
