Appeal to give actress, 27, with drug resistant cancer 'one more chance of life'

A last ditch attempt is being made to raise £250,000 to save the life of a 27-year-old actress with a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

Suzie Aries needs expensive immunotherapy treatment for her rare form of ovarian cancer, which is resistant to drugs available on the NHS.

Her close friend Ollie Sloan has slammed the pharmaceutical industry for ‘making a fortune off incredibly sick people’ as he tries to gather donations.

Since being diagnosed in January 2017, Suzie has endured three rounds of surgery, six cycles of chemotherapy and took part in a drugs trial which gave her cancer more resistance.

She is losing her fertility as a result of her ongoing radiotherapy treatment but says she has no choice as she is ‘determined to live’.

Because her cancer is so rare, the immunotherapy drug that can save her is not classified as standard treatment and therefore is not available on the NHS for ovarian cancer.

On a Gofundme page set up to raise the money for two courses of the drug over two years, she said immunotherapy has been a success for other women across the world and has been used for other cancers on the NHS.

At a cost of £114,000 a year, The Royal Marsden Hospital in London is only able to supply her the drug privately, and Suzie will have numerous aftercare costs for years to come.

Suzie, originally from Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, has had to move out of London to live with her family as her her condition worsens.

On her page, she says things were ‘going really well’ for her right before her diagnosis, as she carved herself a career in musical theatre, working in theatre productions and cruise ships.

She met her boyfriend Karl one month before the life changing news, and he has stayed by her side and supported her throughout the last two years.

‘Sometimes the love of your life comes along at just the right time- I don’t know what I would do without him,’ she added.

Ollie, who first met Suzie when they were 19 in a youth production of West Side Story, says appeals to the government and pharmaceutical firms to make the drug cheaper have failed.

He told Metro.co.uk: ‘I just can’t believe that these f*****g drug companies can get away with with charging [so much], just basically making a fortune off incredibly sick people, making a profit just to give someone a chance.’

‘To give someone a chance of life shouldn’t cost someone £250,000.

‘As soon as you go into anything specialised there’s always a private company making a shed load of money out of it.

‘If someone has one more chance, and this is literally it, then there’s no one more worthy than Suzie.’

Right after her diagnosis, Suzie decided to grow out her hair in order to donate it to the Little Princess Trust, a charity which makes wigs for children with cancer and other illnesses.

She also managed to raise £15,000 for the charity with a one woman show in which she threw off her wig after undergoing chemotherapy.

The fitness fanatic has tried to stay as healthy as possible, running the London Marathon for the Little Princess Trust and the Prudential Ride 100 for Ovarian Cancer Action.

Singer songwriter Ollie, who lives in Brighton, added: ‘She’s just the most determined and incredibly positive person. I can’t even fathom why she’s dealing with this.’
