Snaps of pooches from around the world donning the protective headgear have flooded social media, as pups stay safe during walkies. Despite the World Health Organisation saying it has seen no evidence of the virus being passed on to cats or dogs, owners are still applying the masks. However, a pomeranian is said to have contracted a form of Covid-19 from its 60-year-old owner in Hong Kong.

The claim prompted Hong Kong’s government to introduce new measures, which mean all infected pets must be quarantined for a 14-day period.

Dog owners worldwide have responded to the news by making dog masks.

One social media user went even further by pairing eye goggles with a face mask for their pet, leaving its face virtually hidden.

Another image shows a pug wearing a surgical hair guard.

Ollie the pit bull appears to be cashing in on the pandemic, as his owner positioned him at a makeshift stall in their family home, selling loo rolls.

The adorable images are being shared throughout social media via the hashtag #coronaviruspets with pugs, bulldogs and poodles all featuring prominently in the snaps. Meanwhile, sniffer dogs used to detect cancer and Parkinson’s in patients are now being trained to sniff out symptoms of coronavirus.

The charity Medical Detection Dogs, based in Milton Keynes, has dogs trained to detect fevers.

They can also recognise the odour of bacterial infections. They are now being trained to detect the smell of the Covid-19 virus.
