Anne Sacoolas has admitted responsibility for the death of 19-year-old Harry Dunn in a court plea. The US citizen had been charged with allegedly causing the motorcyclist’s death by dangerous driving following a collision near a US military base in Northamptonshire in August 2019.
Sacoolas, 45, pleaded guilty to causing the 19-year-old motorcyclist’s death by careless driving in August 2019.
Appearing by videolink at the Old Bailey this afternoon, she denied the charge made against her, but admitted the lesser offence.
The wife of a CIA employee stationed at the time at RAF Croughton had diplomatic immunity asserted on her behalf by the US Government following the crash.
She was able to leave Britain 19 days after the alleged incident occurred, which caused diplomatic friction between the two allied countries.
However, in December 2019, the Crown Prosecution Service authorised Northamptonshire Police to charge her with causing Mr Dunn’s death by dangerous driving.
At the end of last month, Sacoolas, 45, made a first appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court via video-link.
At the time, the family of Mr Dunn said they would not comment until the conclusion of criminal proceedings, but thanked those who had supported them.
Prosecutor Duncan Atkinson KC said the plea was accepted by the Crown.
The defendant, who is on unconditional bail, had identified herself before entering her pleas before senior judge Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb.
Mr Dunn’s family, who have long campaigned for justice over his death, were sitting in court.
