Andrew Neil BELITTLES Umunna in hilarious dig – ‘I shouldn’t have let you make THAT point’

The former Labour and now Independent Group MP was asked by the BBC host to explain how the second stage of the parliamentary indicative votes process on Brexit will be set out on Monday. Mr Umunna claimed MPs will be expected to vote on a series of options close to those they rejected on Wednesday night and selected by the House of Commons Speaker, John Bercow.

He explained: “There are likely to be a reduced number of motions tabled.

“That notwithstanding, I think the Speaker will select fewer motions, we’ll probably see it go down to something like three or four.

“But who knows what John Bercow will do.”

The MP was then told to be brief as he asked to make a final point.

He said: “One thing I would say is this is kind of what people like Bernard Jenkin were campaigning for.

“It’s parliamentary sovereignty, Parliament asserting itself.”

The Remainer was promptly dismissed by Andrew Neil who snapped saying: “Okay, alright.

“I shouldn’t have let you make that point.”

On Wednesday evening MPs rejected all of the indicative votes as they tried to find a way forward should the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal get rejected for a third time.

Parliament will vote on the Government’s EU withdrawal agreement on Friday, but the Brexit motion will not cover the UK’s future relationship with Europe.

Commons Speaker John Bercow cleared the motion for debate, ruling it complies with parliamentary conventions which bar ministers from asking MPs to vote repeatedly on the same proposals.

If the motion is passed by MPs on Friday, the vote would allow the UK to an automatic Brexit delay until May 22.

But, passing the motion would not allow Parliament to go ahead and ratify the withdrawal deal, as Brexit legislation only allows this only after a “meaningful vote” on both the withdrawal agreement and the Political Declaration on the future relationship.
