Andrew Marr stuns Jess Phillips on Corbyn disloyalty – ‘Why should they be loyal to you?’

Jeremy Corbyn’s decision to step down as Labour leader has resulted in a number of MPs coming forward to replace him. Jess Phillips on Friday announced she would be standing in the Labour leadership race. While on the Andrew Marr’s the host quickly grilled the Labour MP on her apparent disloyalty to Jeremy Corbyn.

He then argued Labour campaigners and voters would be questioning why they should be loyal to her when she was not entirely loyal to the current leader.

Mr Marr said: “A lot of people who don’t want you to become the leader of the Labour Party look at your record during the Jeremy Corbyn years.

“They particularly look at what you said to the papers not long before the election, that you did not think that the Labour Party could win an overall majority.

“Now that very much may have been true but for an awful lot of activists, it felt like a kick in the teeth.

“They were out there slogging on the streets, it felt disloyal and now they ask why they should be loyal to Jess Philips when she could not be loyal to Jeremy Corbyn and his leadership.”

Ms Phillips began: “I think the fundamental part of the question is did I tell the truth as I saw it.”

Mr Marr interrupted and said: “It is not actually.

“The fundamental part is whether you are loyal.”

The Labour leadership candidate replied: “Is it loyal to stand in front of the country and stand something you don’t think is true?

“I was in Berry yesterday and a woman on a market stall said I don’t believe what politicians say to me.

“She added I just think you stand up there and feed lines and I want somebody who is going to tell me things even if I don’t like them.”

Mr Phillips continued: “Now if the Labour Party had taken some heed of those of us who could see what was coming down the line perhaps we could have changed it.

“The loyalty question is a completely reasonable one.

“I am a Labour Party activist and have been all of my life.

“Hundreds of Labour Party activists came to help me whether it was in my own seat across the country and they heard what people were saying on the doorstep.

“This has got to be about whether the Labour Party can speak and connect and be trusted by the public.”
