Andrew Bridgen savages John Bercow’s ‘Remain agenda’ and reveals why ERG don’t trust him

Leave supporter and Tory MP Andrew Bridgen insisted that House Speaker John Bercow wore his “political allegiances” clearly. While on LBC Mr Bridgen argued that it was the job of the House Speaker to suspend personal and political beliefs and insisted Mr Bercow had a Remain agenda on Brexit. He added that the European Research Group did not trust him as Speaker because of this.

The LBC host Andrew Castle asked: “What’s he actually done wrong?

“What has so offended those members of the European Research Group and people with attitudes that you have?

“Why has John Bercow upset people so much?”

Mr Bridgen replied: “Well, he’s not a man of his word.

“He was elected as Speaker about six months before I came into the house, which is nearly 10 years ago.

“He promised in his written manifesto that no speaker should serve more than nine years. He went through that deadline and changed his mind.

“He has ridden roughshod through the rules of Parliament. He’s basically set new precedents to suit what is clearly his Remain-leaning agenda.

“As Speaker of the House of Commons, you’re supposed to suspend all your personal, political beliefs.

“He actually went on the record an said he’d voted for Remain.

“He’s a man who wears his political allegiance on his car bumper.”

Mr Castle attempted to defend the House Speaker by saying that the car he was driving was his wife’s to which the Brexiteer argued that it was debatable.

Ms Laing laid out exactly why she would be the best person to replace the outgoing Speaker.

Dame Eleanor agreed, saying it was “certainly true” he was “high profile”.
