Andrew and Charles setting the scene for major ‘showdown’ over Royal Lodge

Coronation: Prince Harry, Andrew, and York Princesses arrive

Prince Andrew and King Charles III are setting the scene for a “showdown”, according to a royal commentator.

The Duke of York has become an increasingly alienated figure since his reputation was damaged by his assocation with paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Reports claim Andrew’s older brother Charles and next in line to the throne Prince William are seeking to move him out of the Royal Lodge on the Crown Estate.

Commentator Daniela Elser believes the father and son have both been “digging their heels in, setting the scene for some sort of showdown or dramatic denouement”.

Writing in News.com.au, Ms Elser said: “It was also reported that the King was set cut Andrew’s £366,000 ($476,000) allowance, meaning that although the Duke has a lease on the Lodge, he will likely not be able to afford the upkeep. Think of it as eviction by chequebook.”

In recent weeks, Andrew has been quiet, supporting Sarah – affectionately known as Fergie – as she recovers from a mastectomy following a diagnosis of early-stage breast cancer.

Ms Elser added: “Currently, she is recuperating, and it has been reported that the move has been temporarily put on ice while she recovers.”

According to Andrew Lownie – the royal author and biographer – it is only a matter of time until Andrew faces the reality of life away from the Lodge.

He told the Daily Beast: “Andrew is digging his heels… it’s part of a wider power and status game with Charles.

“Optics don’t look good, but that won’t worry Andrew. I don’t see him ever leaving.

“Charles and William have united to bring him down a peg or two and try and keep him and his family under the radar because they, as the future of the monarchy, have most to lose by his antics.”

The matter is complicated as reports suggest Andrew signed a 75-year lease on the Lodge in 2003.

He and Fergie still reside there together despite divorcing in 1996.

As speculation mounted over their place at the Lodge, it was suggested Andrew and Fergie could move to Frogmore Cottage – the royal retreat previously occupied by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Speaking about reports of the couple moving out of the Royal Lodge, Fergie previously said: “Don’t always believe what you read. I don’t know. I take every day as it comes.”
