American volunteer nurse and her child kidnapped in Haiti
American nurse Alix Dorsainvil and her child were kidnapped from a Christian charity in Haiti.
Dorsainvil and her child were abducted from the campus of El Roi Haiti in country’s capital of Port-au-Prince on Thursday, the charity confirmed.
The name, age, or gender of Dorsainvil’s child has not been identified, but US authorities confirmed they hold US citizenship.
El Roi Haiti is a Christian charity that works to ‘strengthen families, restore relationships, and build healthy communities’ in the country by providing scholarships and educational opportunities to Haitians.
The charity also runs a school, the El Roi Academy, serving 390 children in the impoverished nation’s capital.
Dorsainvil, originally from New Hampshire, is married to El Roi Haiti’s director, Sandro Dorsainvil. She works as a nurse at the charity’s school.
‘Alix is a deeply compassionate and loving person who considers Haiti her home and the Haitian people her friends and family,’ El Roi Haiti said on Saturday. ‘Alix has worked tirelessly as our school and community nurse to bring relief to those who are suffering as she loves and serves the people of Haiti in the name of Jesus.’
The US State Department said they were ‘aware of reports of the kidnapping’ of Dorsainvil and her child.
‘We are in regular contact with Haitian authorities and will continue to work with them and our U.S. government interagency partners,’ the State Department said.
The State Department has issued Americans a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning for Haiti, due to ‘kidnapping, crime, civil unrest, and poor health care infrastructure.’
The government says that Haiti’s kidnapping problem is ‘widespread’ and frequently targets US citizens.
‘Kidnappers may use sophisticated planning or take advantage of unplanned opportunities, and even convoys have been attacked,’ the State Department said. ‘Kidnapping cases often involve ransom negotiations and US citizen victims have been physically harmed during kidnappings. Victim’s families have paid thousands of dollars to rescue their family members.’
El Roi Haiti asked the public to ‘refrain from speculating on social media’ in order to protect Dorsainvil and her child.
