American living in Manchester breaks down in tears during first supermarket trip

An American living in Manchester broke down in tears during their first trip to a supermarket in a viral TikTok video.

Ashlee, who moved from California to the city with her partner, suddenly found herself suffering from a severe bout of homesickness when she entered a local shop soon after arriving.

Recounting the experience on TikTok, Ashlee explained some of the significant cultural differences between the UK and USA since moving to the UK with her boyfriend.

As it turns out, one of the most shocking differences is in how people in the two countries do their weekly shopping.

Ashlee explained that in the UK “there are some similar brands, but they have different flavours for things”.

She added that she received a big surprise when she and her partner tried to buy ice cream.

The Mirror reported that she said: “[We] were trying to buy some ice cream bars the other day and they only come in packs of like three or four.

“I’m used to packs of 12 or something, you know, like three or four what is that supposed to do for me? Are you kidding me, that’s going to last me a day and a half between the two of us.”

Ashlee said it was this ice cream catastrophe that led to a difficult moment. She explained: “After that debacle [I was] so homesick and started crying”.

She also said that the fruit and vegetables in the UK were very different to those she had bought and eaten in the USA.

She said: “Literally everything is wrapped in plastic. Being from California we have such good quality produce. I’ve just really noticed the difference out here.”

Alongside the packaging on fruit and vegetables and the lack of ice cream choice, Ashlee admitted the British weather was also posing challenges.

She explained that it was “tricky to get used to” and that she was learning to “always be prepared” for rain and the UK’s “changeable weather”.

Despite these problems, she said: “Overall, my boyfriend and I are having a really great time”.

She concluded that she was “adjusting pretty well”.
