‘Amazing news’ Princess Eugenie lauded after accepting new charity role close to her heart

The 30-year-old royal has linked up with Scoliosis Association UK (SAUK) to help cast on a light on an issue very close to her heart. Eugenie suffered from scoliosis during childhood and underwent life-changing surgery at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital when she was 12 years old, during which surgeons added titanium to her spine to rebuild.

And her decision to join SAUK has patron has been welcomed by fellow sufferers and royal fans alike.

One fan tweeted: “What a fantastic new patronage for Princess Eugenie!!

“She’s already done so much work for scoliosis awareness, and she will do an amazing job for Scoliosis Association UK.”

Another said: “Excellent news for a great charity which is very close to my heart.”

One scoliosis sufferer said: “Amazing news! As I have a very rare form of scoliosis myself I am so happy to have Eugenie to look up to!

“She is helping by encouraging to talk about it more and to show our flaws, because we don’t have to hide them, but we should be proud of them.”

Another Princess Eugenie fan tweeted: “This is wonderful! I’m sure HRH will do a very good job helping people, congratulations on the new royal asset to your association.”

And another said: “Fantastic news!!! What a wonderful person to have as a patron.”

SAUK bosses announced Eugenie had joined the charity last week.

A spokesman said: “We are pleased to announce that Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie has agreed to become the Royal Patron of the Scoliosis Association UK.

“HRH Princess Eugenie’s own personal story has been an inspiration to many of us and our families who are affected by scoliosis.

“We know that she will not only relate to the work that SAUK does in supporting those with scoliosis and their families and raise awareness of scoliosis, but also help to raise the profile of the charity and expand its appeal and its message.”

Stephanie Clark, co-founder and chair of SAUK, said: “I am absolutely delighted and grateful that Princess Eugenie is to be our royal patron.

“Her bravery and experience makes this a very personal decision, and will continue to offer encouragement to the many people of all ages who are struggling to come to terms with their scoliosis.”

In June 2018 Eugenie shared her personal X-rays on Instagram to show the pins and rods she has on her spine.

Marking International Scoliosis Awareness Day, Eugenie wrote on Instagram: “Today is International Scoliosis Awareness Day and I’m very proud to share my X Rays for the very first time.

“I also want to honour the incredible staff at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital who work tirelessly to save lives and make people better.”
