These are so powerful because each and every woman can relate. “Every woman should feel safe to walk on our streets without fear of harassment or violence.” The disappearance of marketing executive Sarah sparked an outcry among thousands of women.

Twitter user Lauren Darbyshire said she gets scared and “checks all around” her when leaving her home on dark mornings.

She said: “I’d like to say it’s just my own paranoia, but unfortunately there’s a reason women have that instinct.”

Another user described being a woman as “amazing yet frightening”.

She added: “I actually have normalised carrying my keys between my knuckles, taking one headphone out, walking in well-lit areas and calling a friend every time I’m walking.”

A vigil highlighting women’s safety on the streets will be held at Clapham Common, south London, tomorrow near where Sarah was last seen.
