Seven members of the environmental activist group appeared yesterday at the High Court, accused of breaking court injunctions. They all admitted the allegations and face jail sentences when Lord Justice Dingemans hands down his judgment today. Rev Sue Parfitt from Bristol, 79, drew applause from the public inside the Royal Courts of Justice when she said: “If you leave me at liberty, I shall continue to protest in whatever way most dramatically draws attention to the plight we are all in – whether that involves breaking the law or not.”

Stephen Pritchard, of Radstock, Somerset, said he had actually been thanked by police and drivers, adding: “We are all mired in the consequences of climate breakdown.” The 62-year-old added: “I’m fully expecting to go to prison [and] I would consider going on hunger strike…I would become seriously ill and die. But it’s not beyond the realms of possibility.”

An eighth activist due in court is in jail owing to an earlier contempt of court conviction – and a ninth had a warrant issued for her arrest after the court heard she failed to attend due to a protest in Yorkshire.
