Aldi puts Welsh signs in Isle of Wight store after mixing up Newports

Welsh residents of the Isle of Wight were met with a happy surprise when they headed to their local Aldi to find that, bafflingly, it had included signs in their own language. Amused shoppers have suggested the supermarket giant may have confused the island’s Newport with that of south Wales – located just a mere 150 miles northwest.

The incident came after an Aldi store in Cowes, near Newport on the English Channel island was refurbished, complete with new self-checkout machines.

This included adding several signs to indicate to shoppers the alternative checkout method.

But something was lost in translation during the process, as the signage ended up being printed in Welsh.

The incorrect signage reads “Hunan Checkouts Arian parod a cherdyn”, which in English translates as “self-checkouts, cash and card”.
