Alcohol aisles stripped bare after pubs close in fight against coronavirus
Alcohol aisles have been stripped bare in supermarkets after Boris Johnson closed down pubs in wake of the coronavirus outbreak.
Just yesterday the government decided to shut down pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants for the foreseeable to try and stop the spread of Covid-19.
And it seems people are now worried their supply of booze will disappear as they flocked to the shops to panic buy supplies.
Pictures have emerged of shelves left completely empty, with some only featuring a handful of cans.
Unhappy punters took to Twitter to express their concern, with one saying: ‘Not only is there no food there’s now no alcohol on the shelves wellllll this is gonna be a long few weeks [sic].’
Another felt the same, adding: ‘Wait people are panic buying Alcohol now meaning there are no drinks left on the shelves!!?!??? Okay this is actually a disaster now [sic].’

While others stated: ‘Took a peek into the nearest supermarket place and the only shelves that had significant amounts missing were… the alcohol shelves…. seems about right [sic].’
The Prime Minister made his announcement on Friday evening and said the drastic measures were needed to prevent the NHS coming under unsustainable pressure from the disease.
And it’s not just alcohol that is vanishing from our shelves, as basic food and other supplies such as loo roll is also being snatched up.
Stephen Powis, who is the NHS England national medical director, said on Saturday that ‘selfish’ panic buyers need to think of those who will be ‘looking after us and our loved ones’ in coming weeks, as the UK total number of cases passes 4,000.
Addressing the nation at a Downing Street press conference today, he appealed to the public on behalf of his colleagues, bringing attention to a critical care nurse who filmed herself breaking down in tears after being unable to find food at a supermarket following a 48-hour shift.
He said: ‘I would just like to make a plea on behalf of all my colleagues in the NHS. Nurses, doctors, paramedics and many, many others who are working incredibly hard at the moment to manage this outbreak of coronavirus, and are preparing for the surge that they know will be coming at them.
‘It’s incredibly important that they too have access to food, to those essential supplies that they need.
‘I’m sure many of you will have seen a video posted on social media yesterday by Dawn, a critical care nurse who was in tears at the end of a long shift because she could not get access to the supplies that she needed.
‘Frankly, we should all be ashamed that that has to happen. It’s unacceptable. These are the people that we all need to look after us and our loved ones in the weeks ahead.’
He went onto say it was ‘critical’ that shoppers do not shop selfishly and leave supplies for medical workers who the country will rely on ‘more than we ever have’ in the weeks ahead.
