Alastair Campbell faces backlash as People’s Vote campaigner swerves key topic on BBC

The People’s Vote campaigner, who wrote the book How To Succeed, was asked for his comments on England winning in the semi-final. But social media users reacted furiously to him not commenting on politics while on air. It comes as senior officials in the People’s Vote campaign have reportedly been sacked by Chairman Roland Rudd.

Speaking on Radio 4’s Today programme, Mr Campbell said: “I think a lot of it is to do with Eddie Jones. He is an extraordinarily interesting character.

“I was lucky enough to do an event with him awhile back.

“The reason I wrote the winners book is because politics can learn so much from the best in sport particularly right now, you might think.

“It was fascinating to see after the semi-final, Eddie’s message seemed to be ‘we’re still not good enough, we’ve got to move to the next level if we have any chance of winning the final.

“I think he’s got this combination of meticulous and ruthless attention to detail but is good at group psychology and keeping players feeling involved.”

But people on Twitter hit out at Mr Campbell.

One person wrote on Twitter: “Alastair Campbell, central to the People’s Vote splits…is on Radio 4 discussing Maro Itoje and how to be a successful sportsman.”

While another added: “Given his ‘role’ in the disastrous 2005 Lions tour, Alastair Campbell on #r4today opening about the demands of international rugby is the snake oil moment of the week, even at half seven on a Monday morning.”

A third person said: “Alastair Campbell talking about rugby union is a combination of two of my least favorite things.”

However, Mr Campbell did voice his concerns surrounding the latest news in the People’s Vote campaign.

He wrote on Twitter condoning Roland Rudd for firing people which he strenuously denied later in the show.

Mr Campbell said: “Very confused. Roland Rudd just went on radio and said there is no problem in @peoplesvote_uk campaign and nobody is being fired.

“Those letters sent to staff last night saying the campaign director and comms Director have been fired must be forgeries then.”

Mr Rudd said on the show: “There is no row about the Remain side and PV, everyone knows where we stand.

“This is an absurd argument, everybody knows we’re made up of people who want to remain.”

It comes amid reports there’s a row within the campaign over its stance of whether to openly back Remain.
