Alastair Campbell admits he may ABANDON Labour in EU election today – ‘BEST for country’

Speaking on ITV Peston, Mr Campbell admitted he may have to go against his party loyalty in today’s elections. The former Labour man also insisted people going to vote today must think about the country “in the long-term”. Mr Campbell added: “It’s a big decision.

“I voted Labour all my life.

“But on this issue, we have to think about what’s right for the country in the long-term.”

Mr Campbell’s comments come as some polls have suggested the Brexit Party will be the overwhelming winner following disenchantment over Brexit.

Although Mr Campbell did admit there are “very good Labour” candidates campaigning, when questioned on whom he would vote for, he failed to answer.

Quizzed by host, Robert Peston on if he understood why some Labour supporters may not vote for their party, Mr Campbell admitted he completely understood their disillusionment.

The former Labour man also revealed an anecdote where one Labour member insisted that he would vote for the Lib Dems in the hope that his party would “wake up” and “come to its senses”.

Mr Campbell also attacked Jeremy Corbyn for his lack of clarity over a confirmatory referendum.

Mr Blair’s former adviser insisted that if Labour had backed a confirmatory referendum from the start, the party “would’ve walked” today’s elections.

He added: “If Jeremy Corbyn had been in favour of a People’s Vote, from the start of this process.

“I think Labour would’ve been walking these elections.

“Instead, they’ve been trying to ride two horses.”

Mr Campbell added that both the major parties will be punished in the elections today as the Brexit Party carries out what many think will be a landslide victory.
