Air rage lawyer found dead at Beachy Head days after leaving prison

Simone Burns, 50, from Hove, East Sussex, was sentenced to six months in jail in April for a rant at Air India staff during a flight from Mumbai last year. She was recorded calling cabin crew “Indian money-grabbing c***s” before smoking in the plane’s toilets and spitting at staff in an attack that “shocked” other passengers aboard the Heathrow-bound flight. She was found dead at the foot of Beachy Head on June 1, two weeks after leaving Bronzefield women’s prison, The Daily Telegraph reports.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “The body of a woman found at Beachy Head on June 1 has been identified as Simone Burns from Hove.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and next of kin have been informed. The matter has been passed to the coroner’s officer.”

A video of the incident showed Burns demanding to speak to the pilot after cabin crew denied her another bottle of wine due to her already being drunk.

She was initially served three bottles of wine in business class on flight AI131.

She was recorded raging: “I’m a f****** international lawyer.”

Lauren Smith, prosecuting, said the nine-hour flight took off at 4.10am.

She added: “She got up from her seat and began swearing and shouting. She was shouting that she was a ‘f****** international lawyer’ and telling them to ‘f*** off’.”

Ms Smith said Burns also shouted “You f****** a****, you f****** Indian money-grabbing c***s.”

She was also reported to have shouted: “I have done so much for you f****** Indians and f****** Pakistanis, you should be grateful to me.”

Burns said her actions were out of character and that they were driven by a “mixture of altitude, consumption of drink and anxiety”.

Belfast-born Burns was born Simone O’Broin and was called to the bar in 1992.

She represented refugees around the world, but her particular focus of work was on the Middle East.

She found herself in some trouble having penned a paper that accused Israel of the genocide of Palestinians, who she called “a group struggling for self-determination against a colonial, racist regime”.

The Mail Online reports she appeared paranoid on her Facebook page, and told friends: “Mossad agents and Zionists operatives all over my life… there is yet again a fishy smell of CHABAD LUBAVITCH!”

Burns was diagnosed with skin cancer 18 years ago and had several surgeries.

She was photographed at her trial wearing a plaster over her nose as she was on a waiting list for a prosthetic one.
