AI will now summarise your Zoom calls for you

If you find it hard to pay attention on those really long Zoom calls, AI will now take notes for you.

On Monday, the popular video conferencing app launched some generative AI features to its smart assistant, ‘Zoom IQ’.

The first of these AI features rolling out now is ‘Meeting summary’ that allows hosts to create a summary of Zoom calls and share it with attendees and those who missed the call.

The other feature is ‘Team Chat compose’ which lets users compose messages based on the context of a Team Chat thread. It can also change the tone and length of the message as well as rephrase responses to customize text recommendations.

Zoom IQ will use its own proprietary large language model (LLM), those from leading AI companies — such as OpenAI and Anthropic — and select customers’ own models.

The feature will now be available through free trials for customers on certain plans.

‘With the introduction of these new capabilities in Zoom IQ, an incredible generative AI assistant, teams can further enhance their productivity for everyday tasks, freeing up more time for creative work and expanding collaboration,’ said Smita Hashim, chief product officer at Zoom.

Apart from these two features, Zoom is also working on AI features to draft email content, summarize Team Chat threads, organize ideas, and draft whiteboard content.

Users will soon be able to catch up on meetings when they join late by discreetly sending a query via the in-meeting chat. AI will then brief you on what you’ve missed so far. This feature is expected to be ‘available in the coming months’.

How to summarize Zoom calls using AI

To use these Zoom’s AI features, customers will need to go to the Zoom admin console and opt into the free trials for each feature.

As part of the opt-in, customers will also select data-sharing options with Zoom and account admins can change this data-sharing selection at any time.

The company has assured that customer data will not be used to train third-party AI models.

For now, Zoom IQ’s meeting summaries and chat compose features are available as a free trial ‘for a limited time’ to subscribers of Zoom One (Enterprise Plus, Enterprise, Business Plus, Business, Pro) and some Zoom legacy bundles (Enterprise Named Host, Enterprise Active Host, Zoom Meetings Enterprise, Zoom Meetings Business, Zoom Meetings Pro).

However, the pricing for these features after the free trial is still unclear but should be revealed as it rolls out more widely.
