Former Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has celebrated the victory of a candidate who was accused of being involved in the organising of a ‘kangaroo court’.

He posted a photograph of himself and councillor Pearse McGeough on social media after he won re-election to Louth County Council.

Abuse victim Paudie McGahon has accused Sinn Féin and the IRA of seeking to cover up what happened to him.

He and a second victim were raped as children by alleged IRA member Seamus Marley, who has been jailed for seven years.

Mr McGahon (44) waived his anonymity to speak out about what he believes was an attempt to protect his attacker by people associated with Sinn Féin and the IRA.

He claims an IRA kangaroo court was convened in 2002 after the victims sought help from Mr McGeough.

Mr McGeough denies being involved in a kangaroo court.

He has insisted Sinn Féin’s advice at the time was to bring the allegations of abuse to gardaí and added that “as adults, that decision was for the victims”.

Mr McGeough said the testimony of the victims in the case was harrowing and he also commended them for pursing the matter.

He was first elected to Louth County Council in 2004.

He got 1,007 votes in the election on Friday.

Sinn Féin also hailed Mr McGeough’s victory on Twitter, posting about how he had been re-elected to the Ardee ward and adding: “Comhghairdeas!”

Mr McGahon has called for an investigation into the alleged Sinn Féin and IRA attempted cover-up of his abuse.

Last week Mr Adams said it was clear that Mr McGahon had suffered “dreadful abuse” but added: “Sinn Féin did not try to prevent the abuse being reported to An Garda Síochána.”
