Accused Gilgo Beach serial killer's wife breaks her silence

The wife of the accused Gilgo Beach serial killer spoke to reporters for the first time since her husband was arrested and charged with the murders of three women over a decade ago.

Asa Ellerup, 59, returned to her home in Massapequa Park, New York on Thursday after investigators finished scouring the house for evidence.

Her husband, Rex Heuermann, was arrested for the murders three women found dead in December 2010.

Investigators are still trying to determine if he was responsible for the other seven bodies found in the same part of Long Island’s South Shore between 2010 and 2011.

Heuermann, a 59-year-old architect who owned a firm in Midtown, Manhattan, was arrested on Thursday, July 13 at his office. After he was taken into custody, police quickly descended on his suburban home.

Over next 12 days, investigators were seen hauling out filing cabinets, gardening tools, and a large portrait of a woman with a bruised face.

They also removed Heuermann’s massive collection of firearms.

‘Approximately 279 weapons were recovered,’ Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said.

Later, investigators brought in a large backhoe to dig up part of Heuermann’s backyard after detecting ‘disturbances’ underground, Tierney said.

Ellerup and her daughter returned to their Massapequa Park home on Thursday. Although she previously cursed at reporters at the property, she briefly addressed them on Friday.

‘If you want to take pictures, go ahead. I’m OK with it now,’ Ellerup told reporters waiting outside the torn up suburban home. ‘The sheer depression of what I saw was enough trauma.’

Court documents reveal she filed for divorce less than a week after Heuermann’s surprise arrest.

Heuermann was charged with six counts of murder for the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. He has denied the charges.

Neither Ellerup nor her children have visited Heuermann in jail since his arrest.
