A father who died after being attacked outside the pub he ran has been described as a “true gentleman”.

Mark Winchcombe passed away from his injuries following the assault in Neath Abbey, South Wales, at 12.55am on Sunday.

Two 14-year-old boys, and four boys aged 16, have been arrested over the 58-year-old’s death and remain in custody.

Mr Winchcombe, a father of one, ran the Smiths Arms pub with his wife Christine and was a popular landlord with locals, Wales Online reported.

Tudor Williams, who runs a car dealership opposite the pub, told reporters: “It’s a tragedy. He went out to find out what the noise is about and he’s paid with his life.”

Councillor Martyn Peters described Mr Winchcombe as a “true gentleman”.

He told Wales Online: “He was a very genuine man who would stop in the street to have a chat.”

The Smiths Arms pub has a four-star rating on TripAdvisor and is close to a former Cistercian monastery.

Detective Chief Inspector Darren George has urged witnesses to come forward, and said he is keen to speak to anyone with dashcam footage of Main Road in Skewen between midnight and 1.30am on Sunday.

He said: “This investigation is very much ongoing and I would like to remind the public of the importance of not speculating on the circumstances or naming of people they believe may be involved.”

The victim’s family are being supported by specially trained officers, he added.
