US Weekly royal commentators Joe Drake and Molly Mulshine discussed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s name choice for their second child. Ms Mulshine stated that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have made a “real statement” by picking such an intimate royal name for their daughter.

Mr Drake said: “Archie was very much out of left-field in my opinion.

“So if they were still senior members of this Royal Family and they had this baby girl, I think they may have chosen something a little bit more rogue like Archie.

“Whereas Lilibet Diana is really following that royal runway.”

Ms Mulshine replied: “Right, Lilibet Diana is really planting a flag in the ground and saying this is a royal baby.

“This baby is royal make no mistake, she is intimately royal.

“She is not Elizabeth, she is Lilibet, it is a real statement.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have chosen “the most royal name” possible for their daughter according to a former Royal Editor of The Sun.

Duncan Larcombe told BBC News Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have extended an olive branch to the Royal Family by choosing Lilibet as the name of their second child.

However, the royal commentator added that some critics will point to the choice of name as the Sussexes strengthening their brand’s link to royalty.

Mr Larcombe said: “This is very significant, there is no doubt that the choice of name for Harry and Meghan’s first daughter is the first significant, possibly the only olive branch that the Sussexes as a couple have offered to the British Royal Family since they left the country and walked away.

“So it is very significant in that respect. It is the most royal name that you could give.

“That was the name that Queen Elizabeth II’s father used for his daughter as a sign of affection.

“We saw the handwritten note that the Queen left on Prince Philip’s coffin, signed off Lilibet.

“This was a name she has always had since childhood, it is a very royal name.”

He continued: “Critics might say that this is ensuring that the hugely lucrative link for brand Harry and Meghan, to have that link to the Royal family, will be continued with the most royal name.

“Personally, I do think that is a cynical view to take, I do think this is a genuine potential major step forward in the thawing of this dreadful rift that has plagued the family for a year and a half.”
