10 things to look forward to in 2022

We had so many hopes for 2021, following that year, but unfortunately it was a bit of a flop.

Footie didn’t come home, Kimye split up, the weather was a bit rubbish, and a plethora of major events were cancelled due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

However, the new year is fast approaching, making now the perfect time to put the past behind us and start looking forward to what 2022 has in store.

Here are the best things to look forward to in the upcoming year.

Things to look forward to in 2022

Although it is good to get excited by the following events, it is also important to keep in mind that they may be cancelled or rescheduled due to coronavirus.

It is hard to predict the situation months ahead of time.

Fingers crossed!

World Cup 2022

Don’t put your vuvuzelas away just yet – England has a second chance of bringing football home during next year’s FIFA World Cup.

The major sporting event will take place in Qatar from November 21 to December 18, 2022.

Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Is there anything better than a bank holiday?

Yes: two bank holidays.

The event, marking Her Majesty’s 70 years as reigning monarch, will include the Trooping the Colour, a live concert held at Buckingham Palace, a service in St Paul’s Cathedral, and plenty of jaw-dropping light displays.

The bank holiday weekend for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will take place from Thursday, June 2 to Sunday, June 5, 2022.

Winter Olympics

This year’s Summer Olympics in Tokyo proved to be a massive hit, with the BBC reporting a whopping 68.8 million online viewing requests for its Olympics coverage in the first week of the Games.

The Olympic fun has only just begun – as the Winter Olympics are due to take place in China from February 4 – 20.

Fans are most looking forward to the figure skating, bobsleighing, and the ski jump.

New movies

This year saw its fair share of blockbusters, from James Bond: No Time To Die to Last Night in Soho – but 2022 promises so much more.

Comic book fans are eagerly awaiting to see how Twilight’s Robert Pattinson takes on the iconic role of Batman, while the gamers among us can’t wait to see Spider-Man’s Tom Holland star in the movie adaptation of Unchartered.

Bookworms can look forward to an adaptation of bestselling novel Where The Crawdads Sing, whilst Gemini vegetarians practice their bend and snap in anticipation of the release of Legally Blonde 3.

Other big hits to look forward to this coming year include:

  • The 335
  • Death on the Nile
  • Scream
  • Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore
  • Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
  • Top Gun: Maverick
  • John Wick: Chapter 4
  • Lightyear
  • Minions: The Rise of Gru
  • Thor: Love and Thunder
  • Mission: Impossible 7
  • Hocus Pocus 2
  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
  • Avatar 2

And Super Mario Bros. starring Chris Pratt as Mario – although, it’s too early to say if this is something to look forward to.

TV shows

Do-be-do-be-do-be-do-be-do-be-do-be-do-doo.

The Apprentice is returning to our screens in January, finally breaking a two-year hiatus.

Fans of the reality show can’t wait to see Lord Sugar give some harsh truths to a new batch of egotisticle businesspeople – and fire each of them week by week.

Other major shows will be dropping new series in 2022, including Bridgerton, Ozark, Killing Eve, Euphoria, Stranger Things, Ted Lasso, The Mandalorian, The Boys.

Alongside this is a whole host of new TV shows to get your teeth into, including:

  • House of the Dragon
  • Lord Of The Rings
  • Peacemaker
  • The Gilded Age
  • Pam & Tommy
  • Pachinko
  • The Staircase
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi
  • Andor

Get your popcorn ready.

Doctor Who regeneration

Jodie Whittaker will finally hand over the Doctor Who role to a new actor in the coming year – but who could it be?

Favourites for the position include Olly Alexander (It’s A Sin), Michaela Cole (I May Destroy You), Richard Ayoade (IT Crowd), and Jo Martin (Holby City).

But who could Jodie be passing the sonic screwdriver and the keys to the TARDIS on to?

Tune in to find out.

Festivals

The pandemic saw the cancellation of massive UK festivals such as Glastonbury, Download, Boomtown, British Summer Time – as well as worldwide ones such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Primavera.

However, 2022 could see their triumphant return.

Glastonbury has optimistically revealed some June dates, while British Summer Time has signed The Eagles, Pearl Jam, and Duran Duran to headline next year.

The Reading and Leeds Festival has already started selling tickets, and Noel Gallagher has confirmed he will make an appearance at the first-ever In It Together Festival.

Bring on the banging bops and muddy fields.

A new Bond?

Daniel Craig has starred as James Bond since 2006 – but 2022 may very well be the year that all gets shaken (not stirred) up as the actor has previously announced that he will be stepping back from the 007 codename.

Speculation has been rife since Craig announced the news, with many names popping up as potential new double-ohs.

Idris Elba (Luther), Tom Hardy (Venom), Henry Cavill (Superman), and Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire), Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), and Rege-Jean Page (Bridgerton) are just some of the top contenders.

Next year marks the 60th anniversary of the Bond movie franchise, and so would be the perfect time to announce the name of the new spy.

Holidays

With the Covid-19 vaccine rollout, we all had dreams of finally escaping this rainy island and jet-setting around the world.

However, coronavirus had other ideas.

While some of us were able to enjoy a break to France or Spain, the travel restrictions changed so frequently that many had their plans scrapped – or were afraid to make any at all.

However, 2022 may very well be the year that holidays make a triumphant return, as the Covid-19 vaccine reaches the far corners of the planet.

You don’t need to wait until next year to start making plans – start researching the best countries to bask in the winter sun, fun AirBnBs, and mouthwatering all-inclusive holiday deals.

Until travel restrictions soften, just close your eyes and go to your happy place.

Personal milestones

It’s not just the big things you should be looking forward to – it’s important to remember that personal milestones are the ones that will really make a difference in your life.

Are you turning 30, is your best friend pregnant, are you starting a new job or moving in with a partner?

Anything that gives you some joy, even something terribly small like the release of a new book, completing a 10k run, or a visit from a friend, is worth getting excited about.

If Gen Z TikTokkers have taught us anything this year, it’s that you need to romanticise your life and make yourself the main character.

Celebrate the things that mean the most to you, and make 2022 a year to remember.
