Nine in 10 retail staff suffered verbal abuse, while two in three were threatened by a customer – yet three in five respondents were unsure that reporting their experience would make a difference.

Paddy Lillis, general secretary of Usdaw, called for change, saying: “Violence and abuse is not an acceptable part of the job. The Protection of Workers Act came into force in Scotland last August.

“We still do not have similar laws for England, Wales or Northern Ireland, but the Government has backed an amendment to their Policing Bill that would make violence against workers a statutory aggravating factor when sentencing.”
