C&C to open 'brew pub' in former hotel

Listed drinks company C&C will open a ‘brew pub’ in Dublin within the next six to eight weeks, which will serve its Five Lamps Dublin Lager and food, as well as being a working brewery.

It will be in the former Deluxe Cinema premises on Camden Street, which was more recently the Camden De Luxe Hotel, home to the Palace nightclub.

The building has been totally refurbished by a pub group, and C&C is taking a lease for the upstairs part of the venue.

C&C chief executive Stephen Glancey told the Sunday Independent that the Five Lamps brew pub had entailed a €1m-plus investment for the company. “We’re partnering with a pub chain and they will run the downstairs, and upstairs there will be a brew pub,” he said.

“We wanted to have somewhere in Dublin where people could go, and sit and experience it (Five Lamps) and drink it. The brewers will be there, we’ll make the beer, we’ll sell the beer.”

He said that the company had previously spoken about a project of this nature, but finding a property in Dublin had proved difficult. Sites the company had looked at included the Boland’s Mill site.

Glancey said that it further highlighted C&C’s commitment to Ireland, following an announcement last week that the company would shift its stock market listing from Dublin to London.

C&C already owns the Drygate craft brewery in Glasgow in Scotland, which houses a beer hall and brasserie.

It is one of the city’s most popular tourist destinations and has a turnover of €1.5m.

Glancey said: “When people visit a city, they want an experience and they visit craft breweries.”

C&C produces around 10,000 hectolitres of Five Lamps, with sales strong in Dublin.

The lager will be introduced to some Irish bars in London after being approached by a chain.

“We are properly building a brand,” Glancey said. “The only way you do that is by taking a long view on it.”
