A “final call” has yet to be made on whether President Donald Trump will visit Ireland in June, but a team of US officials is due to visit over the next week to scope out arrangements.

Mr Trump is travelling to France for D-Day commemorations in June and Britain for a State visit. A US-based source confirmed “advance teams” from the White House as well as secret service agents are due in Clare where Mr Trump is expected to visit his golf resort in Doonbeg.

However, a “final call” on whether this visit will take place in June has yet to be made and it remains “50-50”.

Mr Trump announced his intention to visit Ireland in 2019 during Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s visit to Washington in March. A Government spokesman said the invitation remains open.

“However, we have not had any indication that President Trump is considering visiting Ireland in June,” he said.
