Trump holds bizarre 60 second briefing over stock surge he said wouldn't happen

Donald Trump has held a bizarre surprise 60 second press briefing about a stock market surge – despite warning of a crash if Joe Biden was elected. The President of the United States made a whistlestop visit to the White House press briefing room on Tuesday as the Dow Jones stock index hit 30,000 for the first time in history.

President Trump said: ‘I want to congratulate everybody…. the stock market dow jones industrial average just hit 30,000, which is the highest in history. We’ve never broken 30,000 and that’s despite everything that’s taken place with the pandemic.’

Trump continued: ‘I’m very thrilled with what’s happened on the vaccine front, that’s been incredible.

‘Nothing like that has ever happened medically and I think people are acknowledging that having a big effect. But the stock market’s just broken 30,000. Never been broken, that number. That’s a sacred number Nobody thought they’d ever see it.’

Trump, who was flanked by Vice President Mike Pence, then highlighted that today’s stock market rise was the 48th time it had broken records during his four years in office – before leaving without taking any questions.

The Dow Jones tracks the values of 30 large American companies who trade on its index, and is seen as a reflection of economic prosperity.

Trump warned it would crash if his rival Biden won. But analysts say a combination of upcoming Covid vaccines, and increasing hopes of a smooth transition to a Biden administration have boosted economic optimism.

The president will make another public appearance later on Tuesday when he and First Lady Melania attend the traditional Thanksgiving turkey pardon at their home.
