Student dangled over 1,640ft waterfall 'for Instagram likes'

A student has been accused of being ‘reckless’ for hanging over the edge of a huge waterfall and posting it to her 35,000 Instagram followers.

Masters student Amairis Rose, 25, was on holiday in Zambia when she decided to visit Devil’s Pool on the edge of Victoria Falls, which is the world’s largest waterfall and is 1,640ft high.

Terrifying footage, captured in December, shows her holding her arms over the edge as water flowing at 110 million gallons per minute surges past.

Amairis, from Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, said: ‘I wasn’t afraid at all, it was all very safe. If anything it felt very liberating being at the edge of such a huge waterfall.

‘It was simply thrilling. I love to travel and do things that take me out of my comfort zone. It really makes me value life.

‘At first I cared about the negative comments but I now understand they don’t know any better, and that just sucks for them. Not me, I had a great time, so it’s fine.

‘I was in Zambia for my 25th birthday and stayed there for 10 days with my aunt and it was the most exciting trip of my life.

‘I can’t wait to be able to take more holidays as I’m so excited to try and beat this experience.

‘Due to work, studying and now Covid-19 restrictions, I haven’t been able to visit as many countries as I’d like, but I’m hoping to visit more this summer.’

Many of her thousands of Instagram followers were amazed by the stunt – but others slammed the behaviour and urged her not to do it ‘just to gain followers’.

Some even claimed Amairis was ‘influencing young people to put their lives at risk for likes’ and demanded she ‘grew up’.

One person wrote: ‘She was reckless just to go viral, and I don’t have energy for arguing with nonsense.’

A user called cvaclaire said: ‘Are you kidding me with these dangerous videos? Your life is worth more than this.

‘[A] person died from doing the very same thing. It is not worth it to your family to do this dangerous stuff. Please stop.

‘You are also influencing other young people as your videos have been shared all over. YOU ARE WORTH MORE THAN THIS. You are more valuable than the amount of followers and likes you get.

‘Do you not care that you are influencing young people to put their lives at risk for “likes” and follows? Grow up.

‘You are the adult here. I’m telling you that your life is worth more, whether your parents tell you this or not, you’re worth more.

‘When a grieving mother contacts her because her 18-year-old daughter died from trying to re-enact her video, don’t worry, it won’t be on you.’

But another poster claimed it would not be Amairis’ fault if anyone copied her, as she ‘didn’t tell anyone to try it and is not forcing people’ to do it.

In response to the criticism, Amairis said: ‘It’s cool as f**k actually, that’s why I did it.’

The Devil’s Pool is a popular attraction that people are able to enter during low water conditions, and has a rock lip protruding upwards that tourists use to stop them from going over the edge.
