Desperate parents were forced to call police after their two young children got locked inside their car in sweltering temperatures.

The ordeal began when the girls’ mother and father got out of the vehicle at a Walmart in Sandusky, Ohio, and closed the front doors.

When they tried to open the rear doors to get the children out “the car had locked and the keys were inside”, police said.

“I was panicking and so scared,” said the children’s mother Nikki DiSiena.

Local media said the children were aged two and three.

With temperatures peaking at 35C (95F), it was reportedly one of the hottest days in northeast Ohio in a decade.

Police were called out and an officer broke a window and was able to reach through and release one of the back doors.

“This was an accident,” said the Perkins Township Police Department on Facebook.

“The parents got out of the car and closed their doors. When they tried to open the rear doors, the car had locked and the keys were inside.”

The statement continued: “911 was called immediately with an officer responding and ultimately breaking a window. The children were checked by Perkins Fire for precautionary reasons and were in good health.”

Ms DiSiena thanked the emergency services, describing them as “very quick acting, calming yet so professional”.

The girls were “still able to enjoy themselves swimming” and were “in good spirits”, she added on Facebook.
