Highland Park mass shooting death toll rises to 7
The death toll from the Highland Park Fourth of July parade massacre has risen to seven, after one of the 47 wounded people died in a hospital.
Lake County Major Crimes Task Force spokesman Sgt Christopher Covelli confirmed the death on Tuesday.
Prior to the latest death, five people succumbed to their wounds at the scene, and a sixth person died at a hospital on Monday.
The shooting victims ranged in age from eight to 85, according to doctors at the hospitals.
As of Tuesday afternoon, nine of the 39 injured people at NorthShore University Health System remained there, the facility’s spokesman Jim Anthony said. One person was in critical condition, four were stable, and rest were in good condition, he said. An eight-year-old boy was transferred to the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, and 28 patients have been discharged.
Law enforcement officials have not released the identities of the victims. However, media outlets have identified three of them based on interviews. They include Nicolas Toledo, 76, Jacki Sundheim, 63, and Steve Straus, 88.
Toledo had recently moved from Mexico back to Highland Park to spend more time with his family, his granddaughter Xochil Toledo said. He was sitting in a wheelchair between his son and a nephew when he was hit.
Sundheim worked at a synagogue coordinate events, among other work.
Straus was a financial adviser and grandfather of four.
