Boy, 2, mauled to death by Rottweilers as grandparents tried to fight them off

A two-year-old boy was mauled to death by two Rottweilers as his grandparents tried desperately to fight them off.

Jaysiah Chavez was in his family's front garden in Fresno, California, when the dogs pounced, Lt. Mark Husdon said in a police press conference.

The boy's grandparents were alerted and ran to rescue as they attempted to fend off the dogs using a hose.

The grandmother was also injured while desperately trying to get the dogs off the child.

Paramedics performed CPR on Jaysiah before transferring him to hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

According to police, the Rottweilers fled the scene but were found several blocks away.

They were taken to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and had to be put down.

Spokesperson for Central California SPCA Walter Salvari told WDSU: "We don't have any past history with them and we did check all our databases and there is nothing at that location.

"But they did seem to want to get out of that backyard where they were located at."

Jaysiah's family paid tribute to the little boy.

They wrote: "Jaysiah was a lovable little boy. He laughed and smiled, bringing joy and happiness to everyone he touched.

"He loved hearing music and enjoyed waking up in his grandparents to start his day.

"He would buy you with his kindness which made it hard to scold him because he always found away with kisses and hugs to get his way.

"The family appreciates all of the prayers and concerns extended to us during this hard time.

"It was a tragedy way we lost our little Jaysiah but he will forever be in our hearts."
