‘If United Kingdom finishes world will be finished’ Lincolnshire resident rages at SNP

BBC Newsnight’s Elizabeth Glinka went to Grantham in Lincolnshire to find out what the people in the area thought of the prospect of the United Kingdom separating. The interview with the group of Lincolnshire residents was held at an annual beer festival in St Wulfram’s Church. The area of Grantham voted overwhelmingly for Brexit in the 2016 referendum.

Elizabeth Glinka asked the group: “How does the idea of the other countries in the union leaving make you feel?”

One woman said: “It’s their choice but I do think it’s sad that it is breaking up a union.”

Another resident said: “They can’t go because they wouldn’t be able to finance themselves.

“They’re only little bits of Britain.

“So how could they go?”

Ms Glinka then asked: “If the other countries in the union say that’s it we’re off, does that matter to you?”

To which a man responded: “If the United Kingdom finishes the world will be finished in any case, so it doesn’t matter.”

The Newsnight reporter replied: “The world will be finished? You think so?”

The man continued: “Well I’m very proud to be English, I’m proud to be British, I’m proud to be part of the United Kingdom.”

Another person sat at the table said: “Who conquered half of the world?”

The man replied: “That’s right.”

A third resident said: “I’m proud of where I come from, people from Scotland should be proud, people from Ireland should be proud, why shouldn’t we be proud? We’re English.”
