BBC host stuns Ruth Davidson who refuses to answer simple no deal Brexit question

BBC Newsnight host Kirsty Wark highlighted that Jeremy Hunt won’t be able to both resolve Brexit with a hard Brexit or no deal and prevent Scottish independence. Mr Hunt insisted that he would do everything to keep the Union of Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom together. However, Mrs Wark argued that Nicola Sturgeon said that a no deal or hard Brexit would “hasten” the end of the Union, leaving Mrs Davidson stunned.

The BBC presenter began by saying: “There are more and more issues that are devolved.

“But Nicola Sturgeon has said that a no deal Brexit, a very hard Brexit is likely and more likely to hasten the end of the Union.

“So you have got two things, you have got Jeremy Hunt saying I’m going to save the Union at all costs but then he can’t have a hard Brexit or a no deal Brexit.”

The Scottish Conservative Party leader replied: “Yes, well Jeremy Hunt also says he is looking for a deal.

“He has also said that October 31 is a false deadline and that he would much rather see an extension in order to get a deal than to go for a no deal.”

The BBC Newsnight host then questioned what would happen for Scotland if Boris Johnson became Prime Minister and took the UK out of the EU on time with a no deal Brexit.

Ruth Davidson retorted: “Well then I think we would leave the European Union without a deal.

“In terms of the butterfly flapping its wing, what are the consequences of that, I’m not sure I’m in a position to answer that.

“More importantly, I also don’t think that Boris Johnson is in a position to answer that.”

On Thursday, Boris Johnson mocked the SNP and those hoping for an independent Scotland in the shadow of the Brexit difficulties.

Asked whether he would deliver Brexit if faced with the threat of breaking the UK apart, the fervent Brexiteer said: “There’s a lot of misunderstanding about this because I think a really good Brexit will help us cement the Union.

“I would also point out the Scottish Nationalist Party would effectively have their guns spiked because once we make a great success of Brexit, they will have to argue to the people of Scotland that they want to rejoin the EU, join the euro, join the Schengen area, submit Scotland to every type of regulation and lose control – which they will just have gained – of Scottish fishing.

“Is that really a great manifesto for the SNP? Absolutely not.”

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has intensified preparations for a new independence referendum despite the British Government repeatedly shutting down her proposals for a new vote.

Ms Sturgeon has claimed leaving the European Union would pose an economic threat to Scotland and in April confirmed she wants to hold a fresh vote on Scottish independence by 2021.
