Young mum devastated as identical twins both diagnosed with cancer

“I can’t let my fear be stronger than my hope”

Nicole Duhaney, 20, welcomed her little lads Emre and Elijah just before Christmas, last year.

But, the Huddersfield mum realised her children were struggling and took them to see the doctors.

Shortly afterwards Nicole and her partner Nile Liburd, 26, were told the horrifying news that both their children had cancer.

Nicole said: “I was classed as a high-risk pregnancy but everything went well and I had a really great pregnancy though I was in Calderdale Royal Hospital for 11 days after they were born.

“I was just looking forward to being a mum, going shopping for baby clothes. I was so excited I couldn’t wait to dress them in the same clothes and show them off to my friends.”

The pair realised something was wrong when both babies developed colds that wouldn’t disappear and that Elijah had developed a strange lump on his right cheek.

Not long after, Emre got a similar lump and Elijah’s grew bigger.

Concerned, Nicole phoned 101 for help before the operator realised there was something wrong with Emre’s breathing and ordered an emergency ambulance.

The young West Yorks mum added: “He was given an oxygen mask. I was terrified, I was a mess. My babies.”

Following a series of tests, it was confirmed both babies had myeloid leukaemia.

The tots were transferred to Leeds Children’s Hospital on April 29, and Elijah was placed in an induced coma after his health took a turn for the worse.

Nile said: “I can’t lie, I’m scared and I would switch places with them in a heartbeat but so far they are being so strong. I am just so proud of them.

“I can’t let my fear be stronger than my hope.”

The couple, who work demanding jobs, have set up a Gofundme page as they face a minimum of a further six weeks staying at the hospital.
