PETER Sutcliffe is to appeal against his status as a high-risk lag in a bid to move to a cushier jail.

The Yorkshire Ripper, 72, is also having therapy sessions to increase his chances of being downgraded.

The fiend, who killed 13 women and tried to murder seven more, is a category-A inmate at Frankland Prison, Co Durham.

But he is due to attend a tribunal next month where bosses and counsellors will decide if category B is suitable, meaning more time out of his cell and a possible move to a less secure jail.

He was advised by his legal aid-funded solicitor to ask for sessions with a prison psychologist to show he was taking his rehabilitation seriously.

An insider source said: “Sutcliffe is doing what he can to show he is ready to be lowered to Cat B and is not a danger.

“He knows doing the psychology, or at least asking to do it, will improve his chances.”

Sutcliffe, was jailed for life in 1981, with a recommended 30-year ­tariff. He was transferred to Broadmoor high-security  hospital in 1984 after being declared paranoid schizophrenic.

He was then moved to Frankland in 2016 alongside other murderers including Levi Bellfield and Ian Huntley.

Sutcliffe, who is losing his sight amid a range of other ailments, bleated to a pal: “I have done my time and more and am not a danger.

“You only have to look at me to see I couldn’t escape.”

But the source said: “Everyone knows there would be a huge outcry if anything was done to make his life easier.”
