Pyongyang’s new ambassador to Iran Han Song U met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and, according to North Korean state newspaper NK News, the two said they hoped to build stronger bilateral relations between the countries.

The official state-sponsored report of the meeting was typically littered with anti-American rhetoric and allegations about the “oppressive US”.

According to NK News President Rouhani said: “US officials have always been oppressive against governments and nations such as Iran and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.”

The newspaper also claimed Rouhani said he and Kim Jong-un must stand stronger than ever against the “extravagance and bullying” of the US.

But, aside from predictable anti-American sabre-rattling, Pentagon analysts will have taken note of the more chilling outcomes of the meeting – especially the agreement to deepen relations between the two countries amid global rising tensions.

Tensions have long been high between Tehran and Washington but they increased further after Iranian terror mastermind General Qassem Soleimani was killed during a US airstrike in January.

Bizarrely Iran issued an arrest warrant and Interpol Red Notice for US President Donald Trump over the killing of General Soleimani.

North Korea has also recently become more openly hostile to the US with an official report into NK- US relations vowing to counter “nuclear with nuclear”.

The same report said leader Kim Jong-un was committed to building up its nuclear deterrent.

In a 5,500-word report, published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Institute for Disarmament and Peace, North Korea blamed the US for the failure of meaningful international dialogue. A statement was released to mark 70 years since the Korean War.

The report said: “In order to eliminate the nuclear threats from the US, the DPRK (North Korea) government made all possible efforts either through dialogue or in resorting to the international law, but all ended in vain.

“The option left was only one, and that was to counter nuclear with nuclear.”

Tensions between the US and North Korea were heightened after the failure of the 2018 Singapore Summit with President Donald Trump.

The report claimed “nuclear threats” against North Korea became aggressive following the Summit.

It said: “The US hostile policy and nuclear threats against the DPRK became further aggressive after the DPRK-US Summit held in Singapore for establishing a new bilateral relationship and building a lasting and durable peace mechanism on the Korean peninsula.”

The report argued the US failed to respond with corresponding measures and said: “Despite the fact that we voluntarily took crucial and meaningful initiatives including the discontinuation of nuclear test and ICBM test-fire for the sake of building a mutual confidence.”
