Women have been left feeling "scared and unsafe” after TikTok videos were posted showing them enjoying their nights out with tags like #sexy and #hot.

The videos, which were taken in Manchester and published without the women's consent, led to "creepy" men tracking one woman down on social media and sending her hundreds of messages.

Taken in the Spinningfields area of the city, the videos usually show unaware young women dressed up for nights out and have racked up millions of views on the social media app, reports the MEN.

Since their investigation began, TikTok have removed the account but there are fears a new account could just be set up under a different alias. Some women claim this has already been done before.

Jessica was filmed by the account while out with friends. She was targeted in two videos – one showing her walking with a friend, which gained over one million views – and another taken from above looking down her top, which had over 50,000 views.

“It has made me feel really unsafe,” Jessica said . “The two videos were taken in two different places – I don’t know if they were from different times, or if we were followed."

The videos were filmed when the unsuspecting woman was out for the evening celebrating her friend's birthday. She was unaware until the following morning when she woke up to hundreds of messages on social media – both from concerned friends and “creepy” men she didn’t know but who had managed to track her down from the video.

“There were lots of comments saying horrible things, like that we looked like prostitutes. It’s obviously not okay for anyone to get comments like that. But especially if you’ve been put on the internet without your consent. I was quite upset.”

Jessica reported the videos to TikTok, but says she was told they did not violate the platform’s terms of use.

She also called 101 to report the incident to the police, but decided to give up after being left on hold for over an hour. She said the incident has left her feeling “unsafe”, and has caused her to change her behaviour on nights out.

Greater Manchester Police said no official reports had been made to them about the account, but encouraged anyone with concerns to come forward, saying reporting online can often be quicker and more efficient than calling 101.

Hannah Dooley, 22, who has been the victim of a voyeuristic crime in the past, said: “Doing this may not be illegal, but the motive is disturbing and it is sexual harassment,

“They are being filmed purely to be objectified by men and sexualised.

“Some of these women are going to have their trust ruined. So I think the police need to step up.

“But I also think that there is a responsibility for the social media platforms to do more. They need to become more proactive about looking after their customers. I would even like to see a collaboration between police and social media platforms.

“Women just want to live their lives…right now, they don’t feel safe doing that.”

A spokesperson for TikTok said: "We are deeply committed to fostering an inclusive and safe place for people to share their creativity. We do not tolerate sexual harassment on TikTok, and we have banned this account for violating our Community Guidelines."
