In what is believed to be an all-time world record for multiple births, a South African woman claims to have given birth to ten children.

Gosiame Thamara Sithole, 37, gave birth to seven boys and three girls by Caesarean section at a hospital in Pretoria late Monday.

Gosiame and her husband Tebogo Tsotetsi already have a pair of twins, so this record-breaking birth means they now have 12 little mouths to feed. Tebogo is currently unemployed.

He told journalists he was “happy” and “emotional” in a brief statement issued last night.

While such extreme multiple births are associated with fertility treatment, Gosiame maintains that her pregnancy was entirely natural.

Tebogo told local news outlet Pretoria News: “It’s seven boys and three girls. She was seven months and seven days pregnant.

“I am happy. I am emotional. I can’t talk much.”

Doctors initially believed Gosiame was expecting six babies, and Tebogo said at the time that he found even that unbelievable: “But after I found out that these things do happen, and saw my wife’s medical records, I got excited. I can’t wait to have them in my arms,' he said.

Gosiame told reporters that the pregnancy was not easy. She says she had extreme morning sickness early on, and leg pains as the bump got bigger.

The health of the babies has not yet been disclosed.

The massive delivery comes just a month after Halima Cisse from Mali gave birth to nine children. The 25-year old was flown to Morocco in March for specialist care after the Malian government intervened to help out.

The danger of infant mortality in cases of multiple births can be high.

Halima’s husband, Husband Adjudant Kader Arby, said he was sure his nine new babies would be fine. ”I’m not worried about that,” he said. “When the Almighty does something, he knows why."

In a recent followup interview ten years after she gave birth to eight babies, controversial “Octomom” Nadya Suleman said that while at the time she was "young, dumb, irresponsible, selfish and reckless", she does not regret any of her children.

The feature noted that the household is run with "military precision", and the children are "happy, healthy, and well-mannered"
