Woman ‘punished’ cat by locking it in washing machine then turning it on

A woman has been arrested after a video of allegedly showing her trapping a cat inside of a washing machine went viral online.

The woman, believed to be 28, was arrested on Monday (February 8), after reportedly deciding to scare her pet after it left its faeces in a place it wasn't supposed to.

In footage circulated online, the cat could be seen sitting inside of the washing machine before the lid was dramatically shut.

The appliance was then switched on and ran for around ten seconds as the distressed cat pressed its nose against the door, South China Morning Post reports.

The frightened feline was freed after the lid was eventually opened and hopped out of the machine as soon as it could.

A second caption referred to the cat as a “frightened little fat girl”, which was posted alongside three clown emojis.

The owner, who lives in Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong, was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty and detained at Yuen Long Police Station.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), which filed a report to authorities, said they received several inquiries linked to the video.

“The SPCA is against any irresponsible behaviour of pet owners that may cause harm or injury to their pet,” a spokeswoman said.
