Woman nearly dies after injecting fruit smoothie into her veins

A woman nearly died after she injected a fruit smoothie directly into her veins in a bizarre bid to stay healthy.

The 51-year-old woman, known only as Zeng, had reportedly developed an interest in unconventional healthy treatments.

On February 22, the Chinese woman, from Guiyang county in Chenzhou, made a smoothie from 20 different fruits.

She then injected herself with the mixture using an intravenous infusion drip.

Zeng said: "I had thought fresh fruits were very nutritious and it would not do me harm by injecting them into my body.

“I had no idea that would get me into such trouble."

Zeng reported feeling itchy and had a rising temperature for the rest of the night, according to the Xiaoxiang Morning Herald.

When her husband noticed her discomfort and found out about the injection, she was taken to hospital and admitted to intensive care.

A doctor told local media the woman had a severe infection, damage to her liver, kidney and heart and was close to dying from multiple organ failure.

She also had a high chance of developing sepsis .

Doctors were able to cleanse her blood of the fruit smoothie using dialysis and injected her with clotting agents and antibiotics.

The woman remained in intensive care for five days before being moved to the kidney unit at the Affiliated Hospital of Xiangnan University.
