Woman held on suspicion of killing 80-year-old man in Denver

An 80-year-old man was killed in a physical assault in Denver Saturday, and a 36-year-old woman is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder, according to an arrest affidavit filed by the Denver Police Department.

The incident happened at about 1:50 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of E. Colfax Avenue and Grant Street. Video surveillance shows a woman, identified by a witness as Stephanie Martinez, attacking the 80-year-old man, pulling him to the ground and striking him several times, according to the affidavit.

A witness who stopped the assault told police he saw Martinez punch the 80-year-old man eight to 10 times and saw the man fall and hit his head on the ground, according to the affidavit. The witness, who was not identified in the affidavit, ran over and stepped between Martinez and the victim, pushing Martinez away and calling the police, according to the affidavit.

The woman grabbed a backpack and walked away; she was stopped by police a couple of blocks away and taken for questioning. She declined to speak with investigators and invoked her right to have an attorney present, according to the affidavit.

A motive for the attack was not clear. The witness told investigators he was familiar with Martinez and had seen her in his neighborhood before, and that he “knows her to be aggressive with people,” according to the affidavit.

The victim was taken to a hospital after the attack and died at 2:20 p.m. His identity will be released by Denver’s Office of the Medical Examiner.
