He was nominated by President Bill Clinton on May 17, 1994, and has served since August 3, 1994. 

Breyer is associated with the liberal wing of the Supreme Court.

On Wednesday, January 26, reports stated Breyer will retire. President Joe Biden was expected to announce his retirement on Thursday, January 27.

The liberal justice is 83 years old.

He is currently the oldest member of the Supreme Court.

Why is Stephen Breyer retiring? 

Breyer previously declined to speak about his retirement plans.

He had been called on by members of Congress, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, to retire in June 2021.

Biden will most likely name replacements for his seat after his retirement is formally announced.

This will be the first seat Biden has the chance to fill as president.
