Washington should stand up for US journalist Glenn Greenwald

Brazil’s government has charged Glenn Greenwald, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and US citizen, with cybercrimes in a blatant effort to crush his independent reporting on corruption. He deserves Washington’s full support.

Greenwald is most (in)famous for helping Edward Snowden leak massive amounts of US government secrets. But that has nothing to do with his work in Brazil.

No, the “problem” is his reporting that casts deep doubt on the integrity of former judge and current Justice Minister Sergio Moro.

Moro presided over the case that sent former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to prison — a scandal that cleared the way for President Jair Bolsonaro’s ascent. Private messages leaked to Greenwald suggest that the prosecution was itself a corrupt conspiracy.

Moro’s Justice Ministry alleges Greenwald is complicit in the hacking that unveiled the messages because he advised intermediaries to delete their copies. It’s a straight-up assault on the freedom of the press.

As of now, Greenwald remains free, still publishing. “We will not be intimidated by these tyrannical attempts to silence journalists,” he said.

This is an American citizen being persecuted by a foreign power for doing right. He deserves full support from the entire US government.
