Vladimir Putin responds to Elon Musk’s invitation to online Clubhouse chat

Vladimir Putin's office has said he would find it "very interesting" to chat with Elon Musk on social media after responding to his invitation to talk online.

The world's richest man tweeted the Russian president, asking him to "join me for a conversation on Clubhouse," an invitation-only social networking app.

Musk followed it up with a tweet in Russian which translates as: "It would be a great honour to talk to you."

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "In general, this is certainly a very interesting proposal, but we need to somehow understand what is meant, which is proposed exactly, so first we will somehow check all this, and then we will react.

"We want to figure it out. President Putin does not personally use social networks directly, he doesn't have them."

The Russian president refuses to go online himself because he believes the internet is a "CIA project" and is openly suspicious of modern technology.

SpaceX and Tesla boss Musk's approach sparked an internet sensation, with tongues wagging about what the pair would discuss.

Some joked whether Mr Musk might try to convince the Russian leader to adopt the meme-based cryptocurrency dogecoin as Russia's new currency.

The Tesla and SpaceX founder has made regular jokes about dogecoin, helping to send its value soaring by more than 800%.

Other Twitter users questioned whether Mr Putin was a member of Clubhouse before offering to send him an invite.

Clubhouse users must first be invited before they can enter the platform, which allows members to stream audio messages instead of text.

It was set up in March 2020 and members can listen in on conversations, interviews and discussions between people.

Mr Musk recently tweeted that he and rapper Kanye West will be making an appearance on the platform.

The billionaire also used the platform to predict that bitcoin was on the verge of becoming a key player in the financial sector.
