The US military has come under fire after firing sweets at kids for Halloween with a kind of advanced weapon also being used in Ukraine to fight Russia.

The Fort Sill army post in Oklahoma took to Twitter to share a video of a rocket system being used to shoot out candy to a group of children who gleefully ran to get their hands on their share of the sweets.

"How else would you expect us to give children candy on Halloween? FIRE MISSION!!!" the military base captioned the video.

The machine the military base was using to fire the candy was a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), which has also been used on the front lines in Ukraine since June.

The US has even supplied the lightweight launchers to the besieged nation in a bid to help them fight back against Putin's invasion.

Reactions to the stunt were mixed, as some people believed it was "twisted" to use a military-grade weapon to fire anything at children – even much-loved sugary snacks.

One Twitter user wrote: "Am I the only one who finds this grim and utterly tone deaf… a weapon system designed to rain utter carnage (including cluster munition with hundreds of bomblets or tens of thousands of shrapnels) is used to shoot candies at children?"

Another added: "I'm not sure if this is super cute or super twisted," while a third chimed in: "Everything that’s wrong with America in a single tweet."

Others were more impressed by the army's gesture, with one Twitter user writing: "Hey @OfficialFtSill Is it possible to book a HIMARS for birthday parties?"

The video comes on the same day (October 31) that Russia launched yet another strike on crucial Ukrainian facilities, leaving many without power or running water.

Witnesses in and around the capital, Kyiv, reported seeing plumes of black smoke as the city was hit with around 10 explosions, leaving 80% of the city without water, according to the mayor, former world boxing champion Vitali Klitschko.
